Store girl return Bt100K to tourist
CHAWENG: When 18-year-old Thidarat Ratsamee reported for work on Oct. 2 as store clerk at Top Supermarket in Chaweng , she thought it would just be another day.
It turned out to be out of the ordinary when toward the end of her shift she found a black wallet with around Bt100,000 in cash and three credit cards in it.
Although it was a huge sum, close to a year’s earnings for her, it never occured to her, she later told Samui Express, to pocket the money. Yet no one else saw her pick up the wallet.
Thidarat promptly reporter her find to her manager. They looked inside the wallet for any identification of the owner, who turned out to be Raffet Hariokru, a 33-year-old tourist from Turkey.
Thidarat then asked the police for help in tracing the Mr. Hariokru’s whereabouts. He was later found to be staying in a hotel in Lamai.
The next morning she personally handed the lost wallet, with all its contents intact, to Hariokru at the police station.
A grateful Hariokru, who said he was visiting Samui for the first time, gave Thidarat Bt3,000 as a reward. He recalled that he had gone shopping that day in Chaweng. He dropped by Top Supermarket on his way back to his hotel.
He found his wallet missing back in his hotel room.
Hariokru thanked Thidarat for her honesty. He also said he would never forget the warmth and kindness of the Thai people.
He also promised to return to Samui someday.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has given Thidarat a certficate of commendation for her honesty. “She brought good name to her country and that makes us very proud of her,” said Phanu Woramit, the chief of the TAT in Region 5.
